Fox 59's Russ McQuaid, interviewed me today regarding allegations of potential Hatch Act violations at the Indiana Housing Agency. The interviews will air at 4 and 6 p.m. today on Fox 59.
The Hatch Act is a federal law that restricts the political activity of certain federal government employees whose salaries are paid for with federal money. It was passed in 1939 to ensure that federal programs "are administered in a nonpartisan fashion, to protect federal employees from political coercion in the workplace, and to ensure that federal employees are advanced based on merit and not based on political affiliation," according to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel.
It applies to federal employees, as well as, state and local employees who work with federally funded programs. The Hatch Act was amended to be less restrictive recently, but federal employees are still not permitted to run for partisan elected offices.
